The Rocks Markets

Each weekend, the cobbled laneways of Sydney’s most historic neighbourhood are transformed by trademark white sails of the Rocks Markets. Over 150 stalls are set up against a stunning backdrop of Colonial sandstone buildings and Harbour Bridge views. Attracting a mix of local treasure hunters and international tourists, the atmosphere is perpetually buzzing, with buskers and roving entertainers’ adding to the markets’ colour and charm.
It’s probably best not to come to the Rocks Markets searching for bargains. Rather, these markets are unique in their emphasis on uniquely Australian gifts and one-of-a-kind souvenirs.
An army of talented local craft-makers and experienced artisans come together to bring their unique, one-off creations to the world. Here, shopping is personal, sociable, allowing the opportunity to meet and talk with the designers themselves.
The market covers several streets with stalls ranging from fashion and jewellery through to leather goods, textiles, homewares, beauty products art and photography. Along with the usual koala-themed knick-knacks, unique treasures to look out for include fine art prints of Aussie wildlife, eco-friendly kid’s clothing and jewellery hand made from gold and silver dipped Australian leaves.
While not a food market per-say, you’ll still find plenty of gourmet treats to gift or snack on, from irresistible handmade sweets to artisan chocolates and lovingly baked cupcakes.
While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Ken Done Gallery. Housed in the magnificent Australian Steam Navigation, the gallery contains a vast collection of paintings by one of Australia’s most beloved artists, and a top notch gift shop for art lovers.
