The Big Golden Guitar Tourist Centre
An iconic site in Tamworth is a notoriously large sculpture of a guitar, the Big Golden Guitar, standing 12 metres high. Of many of the “big” things Australia loves, this guitar sculpture is another, paying homage to the influence of country music on the town and to the nation as a whole. Sitting right along the highway, this large sculpture brings in photo-seeking visitors year after year since its erection in 1988.
The Big Golden Guitar is modelled after the awards given out at Australia’s Annual Country Music Awards, which is why you’ll notice the guitar is missing strings much like the trophies. The sculpture was put in place by Australia’s famous country musician, Slim Dusty, and the area has since gone on to develop an entire centre dedicated to country music. Now visitors can take pleasure in a gift shop, country music, and food to refresh before continuing onward.
