Sea Life Sydney Aquarium
Right in the heart of Darling Harbour you’ll find one of the finest aquariums and oceanariums in the world. SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium takes you on a journey of discovery, as you explore 14 freshwater and marine aquatic environments, which together house an incredible 13,000 individual animals from 700 different species.
You’ll want to take your time wandering through each of the beautifully themed habitats, created to replicate the natural environments of their inhabitants, which range from fish of all size, to creepy crawly molluscs and crustaceans through to birds (namely the Antarctic King and Gentoo penguins who are the stars of the Penguin Expedition habitat) and mammals.
Yes, on Dugong Island you’ll meet one of the cutest, chubbiest and most charismatic marine mammals on the planet, Pig the giant dugong!
One display that seriously stands out is the 1.7 million litre Great Barrier Reef Exhibit. Painstakingly designed and built to recreate a living tropical coral reef habitat, the enormous tank is patrolled by sleek reef sharks, huge loggerhead turtles, endangered sawfish, giant eels and thousands of reef fish in every colour of the rainbow.
Most popular of all is the Shark Valley exhibit, a memorable walk through over 100 meters of glass viewing tunnels. Huge grey nurse sharks cruise just inches away on either side, while giant stingrays glide peacefully overhead.
For serious marine life enthusiasts, SEA LIFE also offer exclusive, ticketed “experiences” not included in the usual admission price. Check out their website for information on activities like the Shark Dive Extreme Experience, Glass Bottom Boat Rides and Behind the Scenes Tours.
