Museum of Contemporary Art
In the heart of Circular Quay, the Museum of Contemporary Art is a not-to-be-missed experience for both local and visiting art lovers.
The MCA is Australia’s leading museum wholly dedicated to collecting, showcasing and interpreting the works of today’s artists.
The MCA celebrates the cutting-edge work of both highly acclaimed and emerging artists from Australia, the Asia Pacific and across the globe. With an ethos that ‘art is for everyone’, the museum brings world-class permanent and temporary exhibitions to an audience of over one million visitors every year.
With well over 4,000 works in its permanent collection, the museum exhibits art across all forms, featuring diverse galleries of paintings, photography, sculpture and moving images including video installations and art/technology hybrids.
Modern Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are also given significant representation.
With a packed annual program of changing exhibitions, there’s always something new, exciting and inspiring at the MCA. There are free guided tours of various exhibitions that run daily, as well as talks by artists, curators and industry professionals held in the museum’s galleries most Sundays.
For art aficionados, the MCA store is an incredible treasure trove of rare contemporary art and publications, beautiful books and unique creative gifts. The on-site MCA café offers excellent modern Australian cuisine and fabulous views over the harbour.
Parents, don’t be scared off by the words “art” and “museum” - feel free to bring the kids along! A surprisingly kid-friendly venue, the MCA runs school holiday programs for budding junior artists, encouraging kids from pre-school age through to high school art students to build upon their skills in an inspiring environment.
