Chambers of The Black Hand
The Chambers of the Black Hand sit forty feet underground and will take you through a journey of images and paintings swept across sandstone walls. Opal miner Ron Canlin has carved out markings in the walls throughout. Look out for animals, biblical entities and dinosaurs in the detailed carvings and works of art created over 18 years. Take a walk through the Egyptian chamber with hieroglyphics and an Egyptian tomb.
Each set in sandstone the carvings will guide you through, like an underground museum; the 100-year-old mine holds over 700 carvings, sculptures and paintings to observe. Take the tour and learn about the history of the mine, the difficulties of digging by hand and processes used. End your visit at the Black Opal Jewellery shop. This underground opal shop will make a memorable experience, enabling you to learn about Australia’s national gemstone, being the only underground shop in the area.
